Post-Graduate Certificate in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
Program Overview
Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) are advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) certified to assess, diagnose and treat individuals and families with psychiatric disorders using their full scope of therapeutic skills, including the prescription of medication and administration of psychotherapy.
This post-graduate certificate provides graduate-prepared nurses with the knowledge and skills to seek certification as a PMHNP. It is available to those holding a previous graduate degree in nursing and an active, unencumbered RN license in the state of Texas.
Graduates are eligible to sit for Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (Across the Lifespan) Certification (PMHNP-BC™) from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
Course instruction is delivered asynchronously online. Clinical hours are required.
Admissions
Minimum requirements for admission:
- Graduate degree in nursing and RN license
- Completion of elementary statistics with a minimum grade of "B" by the first class day
- Completion of advanced pharmacology, advanced physical assessment and advanced pathophysiology prior to admission with a minimum grade of "B"
Additional considerations:
- Recommended 3.0 GPA on all undergraduate and graduate course work
- Timed verbal responses and written assessments (through our secondary assessment provider, Kira Talent)
- Community service
- Leadership and involvement in extracurricular and/or professional activities
- Military service
- History of withdrawals, repeats or failures

- Official college transcripts from each institution (including Texas A&M University, if applicable)
- Admission essay(s)
- Professional resume
- Three academic and/or professional references
- Online verbal and written assessments through our secondary assessment provider, Kira Talent (eligible applicants will be sent invitations to complete this portion following review of their NursingCAS application)
- International applicant credentials (if applicable)

At the completion of the post-graduate certificate program, graduates will be prepared to:
- Provide quality care within the scope of practice of the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner.
- Evaluate and utilize research within the role of a nurse practitioner who specializes in psychiatric mental health nursing.
- Provide ethical psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner care that is tailored to the unique culture and lives of the diverse populations of people served.
- Serve the people of the state, nation, and world as a leader withpsychiatric mental health nurse practitioner competencies.
- Integrate communication and technology-based skills into thepsychiatric mental health nurse practitioner role.

Information Sessions
Interested students are invited to attend an information session to learn more about our programs of study. These sessions provide details on admission requirements, prerequisite coursework, student life, clinical experiences and other opportunities. Students are required to attend an information sessions prior to requesting an individual appointment.

- Sessions last approximately 60-90 minutes.
